Quick Review: 2009 Chateau de Montpezat Merlot

Although Merlot may not walk along the same red carpet as its counterpart Cabernet Sauvignon, it has always been a workhorse grape…silently chugging along, producing delicious, plush, full-bodied red wines. The 2009 Merlot from Chateau de Montpezat is a perfect example of why this often overlooked variety should have a home in your wine rack.

Hailing from the Languedoc, a Southern French region known to deliver outstanding value, this might just be my favourite red wine this year in the $15 and under category.

This wine is brimming with notes of ripe plum and a distinctly Mediterranean edge that gives it flavours and aromas reminiscent of olive tapenade and spice.

At $15 this wine has the character and charm of bottles twice its price and in my opinion its well worth going out of your way to track down a bottle.

This should be available at Richmond Hill Wines and Metrovino Wines here in Calgary. Call ahead to make sure they have it.

Cheers,

Jesse
